Fat: A Reusable Resource

By Carlos Wolf, MD

Q: I’ve been getting face fillers by injection for more than 10 years. Is there anything more permanent and natural?

A: Absolutely! Fat is a wonderful fill with many uses other than cosmetic improvement, including reconstruction. Unfortunately, it’s ubiquitous – occurring everywhere in the body. Nevertheless, healthy fat stem cells are a great source of fill for many face and body areas. Fat removal is a relatively easy procedure, using low-pressure suction so as not to disrupt live fat cells. Once removed, a centrifuge separates live cells which are then replaced, using low pressure syringes for injection into any needed areas. Live fat is also used to replace facial aging, even including youthful athletes who lose facial fat because of constant workouts. Fat is often used in the buttocks, commonly known as a “Brazilian Butt Lift “(BBL). As a constantly growing mass, fat can enhance aging hands and is commonly used as a reconstruction procedure for breast cancer patients. Fat not only increases volume but it has been demonstrated to improve both the texture and quality of skin that lies over areas where fat injections took place. Fortunately (or unfortunately), fat constantly grows in all of us,
but it remains a reusable resource to enhance our lives in many beneficial aspects.
