Help Aging Baby Boomers Live Independently

By Greg Fox

Keep seniors comfortable and safe at home

The retiring baby boomer generation is bringing a tsunami of opportunities for those who will meet its needs. According to AARP 10,000 people in the United States turn 65 every day and the latest figures from the Census Bureau show those numbers grow by nearly 3 percent every year. Also according to AARP, up to 90 percent of seniors want to continue living at home, comfortable, safe and connected to people and places they love. However, due to family circumstances, disabilities or health issues, some need assistance. Or in many cases, just no longer want to do the hard chores that go along with maintaining their home.

Seniors value their independence and don’t want to be a burden, but to “age in place” connected and safe they need reliable help from trustworthy service providers. This opens the space for organizations to come into the home and assist with a variety of services.

The difficulty is identifying competent and trustworthy suppliers who can meet seniors’ needs and be sensitive to their individual challenges. Without the advice and support of family or professionals, these choices can be difficult and confusing. Public social welfare agencies assist seniors making many of these choices but a single, trustworthy resource to provide all these services would be significant.

On the Northshore, Christwood, the premier life plan retirement community, recognizes the need. In November, Christwood will launch a new in-home and on-campus social and wellness division, called “At Your Service.”

According to Scott J. Jones, At Your Service’s Executive Director, this new division will help the Northshore’s senior community aged 55 and older with in-home services, such as personal assistants and companion care, general home maintenance and emergency repairs, nutritional services, and mobility and transportation.  At Your Service will also offer on campus socialization and wellness and a daily adult day stay respite program. These services are A’ La Carte as needed with no maintenance contracts or memberships required.

“All the service providers we deploy to support seniors living at home are Christwood employees”, said Jones. “They have been vetted with extensive background checks and drug testing. Seniors can be assured that the workers we send are trustworthy, compassionate and skilled at the tasks assigned.”

Best of all, Jones said, the services are priced below average market rates. “We’re a non-profit, faith-based organization and our mission is to build relationships based on trust and customer service.  We give much needed and affordable services to seniors.”
