Poor posture can negatively affect both your health and your appearance.  Back and neck pain, fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, rapid aging of the spine, low self-esteem, as well as shallow breathing and inadequate circulation may be the result of poor posture.  Self-awareness and posture correction are a few of the ways you can improve your spinal health.

To maintain good posture when sitting the American Chiropractic Association suggests:

  • Keeping your feet on the floor
  • Do not cross your legs; ankles should be in front of the knees
  • Keep a small gap between the back of your knees and the
    front of your seat

  • Knees should be at or above the level of your hips
  • Adjust backrest of your chair to support low- and mid- back
  • Relax your shoulders and keep forearms parallel to the ground
  • Avoid sitting in the same position for long periods

Spinal manipulative therapy paired with stretching and strengthening exercises improve overall posture. Also low-level laser therapy (LLLT)has been proven to reduce pain and improve function. Recommendations for proper nutrition and other lifestyle changes are also effective. Everyday activities such as texting, slouching, carrying heavy bags, watching TV, physical labor and even wearing heels are some of the factors that increase discomfort of the spine.

Many case studies suggest that care with chiropractic manipulation yields the best results for those suffering with back pain.  Cervical and lumbar manipulation administered by doctors of chiropractic (DC), who are trained to manage disorders of the musculoskeletal system, can provide effective relief from lower back and neck pain as well as certain type of headaches. Pain to other joints of the body, such as shoulders, hips and knees, are also effectively treated with chiropractic care.

There is always some risk involved when managing pain – whether it be surgery, epidural spinal injections or opioid painkillers.  But serious risk of adverse side effects associated with chiropractic care is very low.  Chiropractic care is well documented with high patient satisfaction scores.  If you find yourself suffering from back and neck pain, consider consulting a chiropractic specialist.
